Changing your blood thinning medicine

We are contacting you about your blood thinner (anticoagulant) medication. These include Apixiban, Rivaroxaban and Dabigatran.

The NHS is recommending we use Edoxaban and so we are therefore offering suitable patients the opportunity to switch to Edoxaban. The benefits of Edoxaban include:

  • only needs to be taken ONCE per day
  • can be taken with or without food
  • it has the same benefit of reducing your chance of a stroke by two-thirds
  • it is the same group of medicine as your current blood thinner

Please note – We have not stopped your current blood thinner – it is important you continue taking a blood thinning medication. Do not stop taking your current blood thinner.

The monitoring is the same as your current blood thinner (usually a blood test, height and weight check every 6-12 months, unless otherwise advised by your clinician).

How to book in to discuss this:

Please use the link in the SMS message you were sent to book in to discuss this. We may ask for your current weight so please have this available. If you are unable to use the SMS link, call the surgery and ask for a task to be sent to David Sorrill.

It is important you continue using your blood thinner. Do not stop taking your current blood thinner.
